Reinventing Val
Our Mission is to nurture the soil and productivity of Sullivan Farm so that it may nurture the soul of the Sullivan Family and local community. We do this by using sustainable and responsible growing practices, focusing on the beauty of flowers, woodland stewardship, and pollinator habitat. Every decision we make is shaped by this clear and simple Mission.
Our Vision is a farm full of beautiful blooms, full of life, and joyful with celebration. Our goal is for Sullivan Family Farm to provide joy to others by offering high-quality blooms, opportunities to explore and experience nature, and be a place of celebration and connection.
Nurture the Soil to Nurture the Soul
Sustainable and Responsible Practices (examples)
Minimize water waste by using compost, organic matter, cardboard, and landscape fabric
Eliminate herbicides and control weeds while maintaining a sustainable workload also with the above
Protect a Bobolink nesting population by postponing mowing
But also, continue to produce hay and maintain field/ meadow habitats
Leave flower bed clean-up until spring to provide winter food and protection to birds and wildlife
Plant, but not harvest, sections of the farm to support pollinators
Use paper floral sleeves and a stamp so the sleeve is recyclable
Sullivan Family Farm has a specific focus on perennial plants. While these have an initial investment and maturity cost, I believe they best achieve our mission. Perennials limit on-going soil disruption, and once established, are typically more tolerant to weather extremes and less susceptible to insect and disease pressure that might require intervention. As a result they facilitate a more reasonable and sustainable workload for me and create a legacy for the land itself after I am gone.
