The Village Girl

I’m Valerie Sullivan, a village girl, born and raised. I built a life in education, believing deeply in community, growth, and showing up for others.

And I met Tim.

He was the one. A farmer, a coach, a fixture town — someone who knew the land, the animals, the machinery, and the rhythms of farm life by heart. I loved him, and through him, I fell in love with the land too. He ran the farm. I supported him. Our life felt charmed in the way only simple, hardworking lives can.

And then, in 2023, Tim died.

If you live here, you likely know the circumstances. Suddenly all that mattered was my children, our farm, and this land. The life I knew disappeared, and I was faced with a choice: cling to what was, or step into something new — uncertain, imperfect, and entirely my own. I left my career in education and began reinventing myself, this farm, and my future. Around here, I call it #ReinventingVal.

What surprised me most is that this reinvention didn’t come through grand plans or bold certainty. It came quietly. It came through flowers.

Why Flowers

Life has taught me that pain, hardship, and death are always present and unavoidable. Even the flowers die — and we know this when we plant them. But joy and beauty can be ever present too, if we choose them.

I work hard to find joy and beauty each day. Working in the dirt quiets my mind. Talking to the flowers is therapeutic. Sowing seeds, witnessing growth and flowering, and even watching blooms wilt and fade reminds me of the natural cycle that connects life and death — not as opposites, but as partners.

Flowers don’t deny loss. They coexist with it.

I grow flowers as an act of choosing joy and beauty anyway. I grow them as reminders that something can be temporary and still be meaningful. That beauty doesn’t need to last forever to matter.

I encourage you to choose joy too.
Don’t fear the wilt.
Buy the flowers.

Where I Am Now

Sullivan Family Farm is a work in progress — just like me. I’m learning as I go, figuring things out one bloom at a time, and sharing the journey honestly. There are wins, flops, and plenty of lessons learned the hard way. I call this part #PrioritizingPretty — not as an escape from reality, but as a deliberate choice to notice beauty within it.

If you follow along, you’ll find flowers grown with care, stories rooted in truth, and a farm that reflects resilience, humor, and hope.

This is my dirt.
You’re welcome here.

From my dirt to yours,
Valerie
